Public science

Are you looking for ways to raise public interest in your research, perhaps by writing for the media? Or are you interested in mobilizing public participation in your work via citizen science? I can help you prepare your ideas to meet the wider world—thoughtfully, ethically, and in ways that capture the vibrancy and excitement of your work. I am especially interested in working with research groups and with first-time authors, with or without previous experience in this area.

A bit about my background in public science: from 2017–2020, I worked on the classic citizen science game Foldit, collaborating with game designers as well as researchers in chemistry and biomedicine to create a graphic novel narrative incentivizing non-expert users to participate in protein f0lding simulations. You can read about our design strategies here, and about the values underpinning citizen science gaming here. The team is currently collecting data on the narrative’s effects on player retention, skill, and learning.

My own research also centers public science messaging, specifically in race and genetics, microbiome science, and videogames.
